For our sixth post, let’s head to the mountains of the West—the “Queen of the Sahyadris.” As an Indian blogger, I know that Mahabaleshwar is the ultimate weekend escape for anyone near Mumbai or Pune.
This post focuses on the mist, the valleys, and—of course—the world-famous strawberries!
Strawberries & Shikhars: A Foggy Weekend in Mahabaleshwar

There is something magical about the Western Ghats during the winter. The air gets crisp, the “dhund” (mist) settles over the lakes, and the scent of woodfire fills the villages. This weekend, I traded the city humidity for the cool heights of Mahabaleshwar.
1. The Arthur’s Seat Trek
Often called the “Queen of all points,” Arthur’s Seat offers a dramatic view of the Savitri River on one side and the lush green plateau on the other.
- The Phenomenon: If you throw a light object (like a cap) into the valley, the high air pressure actually throws it back up at you! It’s a fun little trick of nature that every traveler tries at least once.
- Pro Tip: Reach here by 8:30 AM. Once the crowds arrive, the silence of the valley is lost.
2. Mapro Garden: The Strawberry Mecca
You cannot visit Mahabaleshwar and not visit Mapro Garden. Since it’s strawberry season (December to March), the entire place smells like heaven.

3. Spiritual Roots at Old Mahabaleshwar
Away from the touristy markets lies Old Mahabaleshwar. The Mahabaleshwar Temple and the Panchganga Temple (where five rivers, including the Krishna, are said to originate) are built in the Hemadpanti architectural style. The stone carvings and the ancient water tanks provide a sense of calm that is hard to find elsewhere.
🍓 My Mahabaleshwar Checklist:
- Boating at Venna Lake: Best done just before sunset when the mist starts rolling in over the water.
- Buy Local Jam: Pick up some mulberry or strawberry preserves to take home.
- Elephant’s Head Point: For the best “mountain-meets-sky” photos.
- Corn Patties: Grab these hot from a street vendor at the main market.
📍 Travel Insight: The Drive Matters
The drive up the Pasarni Ghat is half the fun. The winding roads are beautiful, but they can be tricky. If you’re driving yourself, be careful of the monkeys—they are professional thieves when it comes to snacks!
